Deep Learning

Learning that Connects

Between memorizing a fact and understanding why it matters. Our philosophies on deep learning bridges that gap.

It’s the moment a concept clicks into place and connects to everything else. The satisfaction of solving a problem that required real thought. The confidence that comes from struggling with something difficult and figuring it out anyway. This kind of learning stays with students because it’s earned through genuine engagement.

At STS, deep learning happens when students tackle real problems, make authentic discoveries, and build understanding that lasts. The IB framework shapes this approach from K-12.

The goal is to grow really great humans

Balanced Learning

Students develop design thinking, character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and leadership alongside curriculum mastery. Teachers create lessons that connect subjects rather than isolating them. Assessment moves beyond recall. Students demonstrate understanding through projects, presentations, research, and application.

Student
Empowerment

Students can select their own research topics, design their own experiments, and pursue their own questions. They gain comfort with ambiguity and learn from failure in a safe environment. Teachers are always there to guide, but students determine the destination.

Immersive
Experiences

The 220-acre campus serves as an extended classroom. Students study ecosystems in wetlands, test physics principles on trails, conduct field research in forests. Community partnerships, travel opportunities, and international connections expand learning beyond campus walls.

Demonstrating
Mastery

Assessment in the IB framework asks students to prove they understand, not just remember. This looks different at each level: Primary Years students explain their thinking through inquiry, Middle Years students complete interdisciplinary units that connect multiple subjects, and Diploma Programme students write research papers and defend original investigations. Teachers provide specific feedback on growth and next steps while students track their own progress and reflect on their learning.

THE MYP PERSONAL PROJECT

Year-Long Deep Work

Every Grade 10 student spends their final year in the IB Middle Years Programme completing a Personal Project. This isn’t a week-long assignment or even a month-long unit. Students dedicate an entire school year to pursuing something that genuinely
matters to them. While deep learning runs through the curriculum at every level, this project marks a special experience students look forward to.

Recent projects have included building electric guitars from scratch while learning about sound physics and craftsmanship through repeated failure and adjustment. Students have created graphic novels addressing mental health stigma while conducting research and developing artistic skills simultaneously. Others have restored family heirlooms by tracing historical provenance and mastering conservation techniques. The variety is remarkable, but the commitment remains consistent across every project. Students identify a meaningful challenge, develop genuine expertise, create something tangible, and present their work publicly to their peers, teachers and parents.

Learning
That Lasts

Deep learning at STS produces students who know how to think, not just what to think. They leave prepared to ask questions that matter, work across differences, and create solutions to problems without obvious answers.

For over 50 years, we’ve stayed committed to this approach because we’ve seen what it produces: curious, confident, capable students who lead with courage.

In the landscape of Canadian independent schools, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) holds a special place partly because of its International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching and learning practice continuum.

A Gnarly Way to Learn

As educators, preparing our students for the future can be an intimidating concept. After all, predicting it with any degree of accuracy can be nearly impossible. However, by presenting a challenge, then teaching them how to examine, identify, research, communicate, empathize, and self-manage that challenge, they will be equipped with the versatility and resourcefulness to be ready for every possible future – no matter what path they choose to take.

Tomorrow Begins with Empowered Teachers

What do we do well? What can we do better? How do we ensure academic excellence, rigour, and deep learning remain at the core of what we do? And how do we gauge how STS is meeting its mission and value-driven goal of continuous improvement across multiple fields?
