Student Services FAQs
What is Student Services at STS?
Student Services supports the academic, social-emotional, health and post-secondary development of students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. A collaborative team â including learning strategists, counsellors, post-secondary counsellors, educational assistants, a school nurse and psychologist â works alongside teachers to support students at every stage of their journey.
What does a Learning Strategist do?
Learning Strategists support students in developing the habits, skills, and strategies that help them learn effectively and confidently. This may include support with organization, study routines, executive functioning, self-advocacy, accommodations, and classroom learning strategies.
What do Guidance Counsellors support?
Guidance Counsellors support students’ social-emotional well-being and help them navigate the challenges and changes that naturally come with growing up. They provide guidance, check-ins, skill-building, and age-appropriate support to help students build resilience, self-awareness, and healthy coping strategies.
What role do Educational Assistants play?
Educational Assistants are an important part of the Student Services team and the school’s wrap-around approach to student support. They work closely with students and teachers in the classroom to help implement strategies, reinforce learning, and support student success in meaningful and practical ways.
How does support evolve across Kindergarten to Grade 12?
Student Services walks alongside students at every stage. In the younger years, support focuses on building confidence, healthy habits, and a strong foundation for learning. Through Middle School, the focus shifts toward independence, self-awareness, and navigating increasing academic and social demands. In Senior School, support continues alongside post-secondary planning, career exploration, and preparation for life beyond STS â so students leave feeling ready, not just qualified.
What kind of post-secondary support is available?
Post-Secondary Guidance Counsellors work with Middle and Senior School students as they explore future pathways and navigate the post-secondary planning process. This includes support with applications, timelines, research, and finding opportunities that reflect each student’s interests, goals, and strengths.
How does Student Services work with families?
Partnership with families is an important part of how Student Services operates. By working collaboratively with students, teachers, and parents or guardians, the team helps create a consistent and supportive approach â so every student feels known, supported, and set up to thrive.
