Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes graduates of STS and its founding schools who have made exceptional contributions to the school and its community. It honours those who have advanced new ideas, supported meaningful developments, and demonstrated sustained dedication, creativity, and leadership.

This award recognizes alumni who carry the spirit of STS forward through active and ongoing engagement. Whether through service, leadership, or long-standing involvement, recipients reflect a strong and enduring commitment to the school.

2026 Award Winner

Alim Mitha '93

Neurosurgeon, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Calgary, Researcher, and Medical Innovator

We are proud to celebrate Alim as this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. A graduate of STS from Grades 4 to 12, Alim has built an extraordinary career at the intersection of medicine, research, and innovation.

After earning degrees at the University of Michigan and University of Alberta, he completed neurosurgical residency training in Calgary, a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at Harvard, a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, and advanced fellowship training at the Barrow Neurological Institute.

Now a neurosurgeon at Foothills Medical Centre and associate professor at the University of Calgary, Alim leads a biomedical engineering research lab and is co-founder and CTO of Fluid Biomed, a Calgary company developing a bioabsorbable stent for brain aneurysm treatment. A current STS parent, he remains closely and generously connected to the School.

2026 | Alim Mitha ’93

Dr. Alim P. Mitha, MD, SM, FRCSC is a highly respected neurosurgeon based in Calgary, Alberta, specializing in cerebrovascular, endovascular, and skull-base neurosurgery. He serves as an Associate Professor at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, and holds appointments with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.

2025 | Jeffrey Kahane '89

Jeff exemplifies the qualities of a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient through his exceptional legal career and dedication to community service. As the founder of Kahane Law Office, he has built a thriving firm, earning King’s Counsel in 2022 and numerous accolades.

2024 | Todd Worsley '88

Todd has maintained a strong connection to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School since attending from 1980 to 1985, alongside his sister Christy (Stacey) ’86. Following Christy’s passing in 1995, the Worsley family established two annual creative writing awards in her honour, recognizing her connection to the STS community.

2023 | Dr. Dana Lougheed '90

Dana Lougheed ’90 is an entrepreneur with more than 26 years of experience across the health, wellness, and finance industries. An active community advocate, she serves on several not-for-profit boards and has completed the ICD Not-for-Profit Governance program.

2020 | Paul Storwick '78

As both an alumnus and a parent, Paul has been a dedicated supporter of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School and the Alumni Association. He served as a member of the Alumni Association Executive and the STS Board of Governors from 2014 to 2016, during his term as President of the Alumni Association.

2019 | Sloan Pipella-Clark '81

Having grown up on the STS campus, Pam has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the School and its motto, Nothing but our best. As both an alumna and a parent, she has contributed to the growth of STS through her leadership, generosity, time, and energy.

2016 | Vinay Ruparell '80

As both an STS alumnus and parent, Vinay has demonstrated strong leadership in building alumni programming, engaging volunteers, strengthening events, and profiling alumni within the School.

2015 | Chris Shopperly '80

As an alumnus and parent, Chris has demonstrated a strong and lasting commitment to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. As President of the Alumni Association from 2005 to 2007, his leadership helped revitalize alumni engagement and strengthen connections within the community.

2014 | Richard Lindseth '73

Richard has made significant contributions to both Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School and the broader community. A leading architect, he is recognized for creative and thoughtful designs in Calgary, across Canada, and internationally.

2013 | Gretchen (Cross) Thompson '78

An alumna of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, Gretchen is part of a four-generation STS family and has maintained a deep connection to the School for more than 40 years. Her involvement has spanned many roles, including student, alumna, parent, President of the STS Alumni Association, Board Chair, and STS Foundation Director.

2012 | John Francis '47

A Strathcona School for Boys alumnus and STS parent in the 1970s, John is an important part of the School’s history. He was a strong advocate for the merger of the founding schools and the move to the country campus, and helped reinforce a focus on sportsmanship, nature, and outdoor education.

2011 | Janice Heard '75

Janice and her siblings grew up on the STS campus, immersed in all aspects of school life. Her family’s connection continued with her daughters, among the first of several three-generation families to attend STS.

2010 | Fred Mannix '56 and Ron Mannix '62

The Mannix family’s connection to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School spans more than 60 years. Fred and Ron, both alumni of Strathcona School for Boys, have remained dedicated supporters of the School over that time.

2009 | David McDermid '57

A Strathcona School for Boys alumnus, David has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. He joined the Board of Governors in 1971, providing leadership and pro bono legal counsel to the School for 28 years.

2008 | David E. Dover '48

David became a boarder at Strathcona School for Boys during the Second World War. He later played a key role in fundraising efforts to establish the School on its current campus in the early 1970s.

2007 | Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Hess '34

A St. Hilda’s alumna, Marmie has lived a life that reflects the mission of STS through her commitment to academic excellence, community leadership, and a broad range of experiences. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and went on to build a career marked by active involvement in both business and volunteer work.
